Miracle : Man Rescued Alive Eight Days After Venezuela’s Twin Earthquakes

In a rare moment of hope amid overwhelming devastation, rescue workers in Venezuela on Thursday pulled a man alive from the rubble eight days after twin earthquakes shattered the country, killing thousands and leaving entire communities in ruins. The rescue comes as authorities begin shifting from frantic search‑and‑rescue operations to the daunting humanitarian response required to support tens of thousands of displaced residents.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the survivor, 43‑year‑old security guard Hernan Gil, was trapped beneath a collapsed seven‑storey building in Catia La Mar, one of the hardest‑hit coastal areas. He had been located three days earlier, prompting an intense multinational rescue effort involving teams from Venezuela, Chile, the United States, Portugal, Costa Rica, El Salvador and Mexico.

“This is truly a miracle,” his wife, Gusbimar Gonzalez, told AFP. ValidViewNetwork reports that rescuers dug a three‑metre tunnel to reach Gil, supplying him with water and oxygen through hoses as they worked around the clock to free him.

But while Gil’s rescue has lifted spirits, the broader picture remains grim. Venezuela’s government says at least 2,295 people have been confirmed dead, 11,000 injured, and an estimated 50,000 people reported missing. More than 60,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed, leaving 13,000 people homeless. Many structures in La Guaira have already been marked with the letter D — “deceased”, signalling no signs of life beneath the rubble.

Al Jazeera correspondent Zein Basravi, reporting from La Guaira, said the sheer scale of destruction has made rescue operations increasingly difficult. “There are 58,000 buildings that have been destroyed or damaged… so many days into the aftermath of this earthquake, it is less and less likely that anyone can be found alive,” he said.

Attention is now turning to the humanitarian crisis unfolding across the country. Aid agencies warn that understaffed medical centres are overwhelmed and at risk of a health emergency, with untreated injuries and infectious diseases likely to surge. Venezuela’s health system has long struggled with shortages of equipment, trained personnel and reliable power supply.

The World Food Programme has appealed for $50m to feed 500,000 people for three months, while the UN Development Programme estimates $6.7bn in physical damage based on satellite imagery.

International support has begun to flow. The United States has pledged $300m, according to the Department of State. The administration of US President Donald Trump — who abducted Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro earlier this year — continues to back interim President Delcy Rodriguez despite criticism over preparedness. Reporting from Caracas, journalist Noris Soto said foreign aid will be “more than necessary” as Venezuela faces the dual burden of long‑standing economic hardship and catastrophic natural disaster.
