​Guinea-Bissau Opposition Leader Imprisoned Ahead of Presidential Polls

​Bissau — A military court in Guinea-Bissau has ordered the immediate imprisonment of opposition leader Domingos Simões Pereira, significantly escalating political volatility ahead of the country’s upcoming December 6 presidential election.

​Pereira, who heads the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), was taken into custody by heavily armed rapid-response officers on Friday morning. The move follows a period of house arrest that began in January 2026, after his initial detention during the November 2025 military takeover that deposed former President Umaro Sissoco Embaló.

​Allegations and Legal Controversy

​The military junta, currently led by General Horta Inta-A, has accused Pereira of financing an attempted coup in October 2025, as well as involvement in a prior coup attempt in 2023.

​The opposition leader’s legal team has vehemently rejected these charges, characterizing them as a politically motivated effort to sideline him from the democratic process. Roberto Indeque, one of Pereira’s attorneys, confirmed that the defense team boycotted Friday’s hearing, citing a lack of legal transparency and the failure of the court to formally notify them of the proceedings.

​The arrest occurs against a backdrop of prolonged instability in the West African nation, which has experienced numerous coups since gaining independence in 1974. The current military government seized power in November 2025, just as presidential election results were being finalized, alleging a need to restore order.

​General Horta Inta-A, who was sworn in as transitional president following the November coup, has maintained a firm grip on the state, promising elections for this December. However, the detention of key opposition figures, coupled with the destruction of electoral materials during the November takeover, has drawn criticism from international observers and human rights groups concerned about the legitimacy of the upcoming transition.
