Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, the wife of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has publicly refuted recent online reports alleging that she has initiated divorce proceedings against her husband.
In an official statement released on her verified social media handle, Mrs. Okwu-Kanu dismissed the rumors as entirely false and cautioned the public against consuming unverified information. She expressed strong concern over the trend of fabricating details about her family life, noting that such misinformation undermines responsible journalism and misleads the public.
”For the avoidance of doubt, I have not filed for divorce. The publication is entirely false and should be treated as misinformation,” she stated. She further urged the public to rely exclusively on information provided directly by her or through her authorized representatives.
The development comes as Nnamdi Kanu continues to serve a life sentence at the Sokoto Correctional Centre. His imprisonment follows a landmark ruling in November 2025 by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which found him guilty on seven counts of terrorism-related charges. While he was sentenced to life imprisonment on five of those counts, the judge ordered that the sentences—including a 20-year term and a five-year term on the remaining counts—run concurrently.

Legal representatives for the IPOB leader recently took steps to challenge the conviction, with a notice of appeal reportedly filed at the Court of Appeal on February 4, 2026. Since his transfer to the Sokoto facility in late 2025, the legal team has frequently voiced concerns regarding the logistical challenges the location poses to his defense and his ability to consult with his family and counsel.
