In a remarkable turn of events that has provided a glimmer of hope amidst a national tragedy, a three-year-old boy has been pulled alive from the wreckage in Venezuela, six days after a pair of powerful earthquakes devastated the north-central region.
The child, identified by authorities as Klieber Morán, was extracted from the ruins of the Los Corales Garden 1 building in the state of La Guaira. His rescue on Tuesday serves as a rare success story in an operation that has largely transitioned from rescue to recovery, as experts note that the critical “golden period” for finding survivors under rubble typically ends within 72 hours.
Jordanian rescue teams, currently assisting local Venezuelan authorities, led the extraction. Footage from the scene captured the emotional moment as rescuers cheered upon successfully reaching the boy. Interim President Delcy Rodríguez hailed the survival as a “source of hope for our people,” and Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez confirmed that the toddler was immediately given first-aid before being transported to a hospital in the capital, Caracas, where his vital signs were reported as stable.
The rescue comes as the nation grapples with the aftermath of two massive, back-to-back tremors—measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale—that struck on the evening of June 24, 2026. The epicenters were identified near the municipalities of Veroes, Yaracuy.
According to the latest situation reports, the scale of the disaster is vast. The death toll has reached at least 2,295, with over 11,000 people reported injured. Tens of thousands more remain displaced, and international aid agencies have warned of an escalating humanitarian crisis. Satellite assessments from NASA suggest that approximately 58,870 buildings have been damaged or completely destroyed.
UNHCR and other relief organizations are currently struggling to manage severe shortages of food, shelter, and medical supplies, particularly in hard-hit areas like La Guaira, where infrastructure and communication lines have been largely severed. While a 47-metric-ton shipment of humanitarian aid from UNICEF arrived on Tuesday to assist families, local community tensions have risen as survivors struggle to access basic necessities.
Search and rescue operations continue in the disaster zone, with authorities and international partners working to locate the thousands still missing, clinging to the hope that other miracles might yet occur beneath the debris.
