ABUJA, Nigeria — Senate President Godswill Akpabio has petitioned the Department of State Services (DSS) over the circulation of a purported anti-North statement attributed to him on Facebook and other digital platforms, describing the content as fabricated and dangerous.
The petition, filed on September 9, 2026, follows the emergence of a statement that claimed Akpabio threatened Northerners with suffering if President Bola Tinubu loses the 2027 election.
Akpabio has denied making the statement, calling it a “complete fabrication” and challenging those circulating it to produce evidence of where, when, and before whom he allegedly spoke.
The development comes amid a broader crackdown on misinformation and political manipulation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
It also raises questions about the growing use of fake quotes, doctored images, and fabricated statements to inflame ethnic and regional tensions.
The Dangerous Game of Political Fabrication
