A former driver, Jonathan Marcus, has been sentenced to death by hanging for the brutal murder of his 80-year-old former employer, Mr. Adebola Ezekiel, and his 79-year-old wife, Mrs. Abiodun Ezekiel. The judgment, delivered by Hon. Justice M. S. Idris of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, brings a somber conclusion to a case that shocked the residents of Abuja’s Apo Legislative Quarters.
The murders took place on the night of April 1, 2024. According to court records and police testimony, Marcus gained unauthorized access to the couple’s residence at approximately 11:00 p.m. to commit the act. The victims, who had previously dismissed Marcus from his position as their driver following a history of professional disagreements, were killed within their own home.
Following the discovery of the crime, the FCT Police Command launched an extensive investigation. Detectives successfully tracked the suspect to Obajana in Kogi State, where he had fled in an attempt to evade capture. Upon his arrest and subsequent transfer back to Abuja, Marcus confessed to the crime during interrogation.

Throughout the trial, the prosecution presented a compelling case, supported by evidence and the suspect’s own admissions. In his ruling, Justice M. S. Idris stated that the prosecution had successfully proven its case beyond reasonable doubt, leading to the capital sentence.
This conviction serves as a stark reminder of the security challenges faced by residents and the firm stance of the judiciary regarding violent crime. The FCT Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, reaffirmed its commitment to the safety of Abuja residents, promising continued diligence in ensuring that those who perpetrate such heinous acts face the full weight of the law.
