SALZBURG – A horrific traffic accident in the northern district of Itzling, Salzburg, left one person dead and seven others injured on Monday after a municipal trolleybus veered off the road and plowed into a supermarket.
The Austrian Red Cross confirmed the fatality, stating that emergency medical teams attempted to resuscitate the victim at the scene, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Among the seven injured, two are reported to be in serious condition and are currently battling for their lives at a nearby hospital.
The Scene of the Crash
The incident occurred at a busy intersection in the northern part of the city. According to eyewitness accounts and initial reports from the scene, the trolleybus—a common fixture in Salzburg’s public transport network—suddenly left its designated lane, mounted the curb, and smashed through the storefront of the local supermarket.
Images from the site show significant structural damage to the building, with the front of the bus lodged deep within the retail space. Firefighters and specialized rescue units were dispatched immediately to stabilize the building and extricate the vehicle.
Response and Investigation
A large-scale emergency operation was triggered following the crash. “The focus remains on treating the injured and ensuring the structural integrity of the supermarket,” a Red Cross spokesperson told AFP.
Authorities have cordoned off the area, leading to significant traffic disruptions throughout the northern Salzburg district. While the identity of the deceased has not yet been released, police have launched a full-scale investigation to determine the cause of the accident.

Preliminary inquiries are looking into potential mechanical failure or a medical emergency involving the driver, though no official cause has been established. Structural experts are also on-site to assess whether the supermarket building is at risk of collapse following the impact.
Salzburg’s municipal authorities have expressed their condolences to the victims’ families, noting that this is one of the most severe public transport accidents the city has witnessed in recent years.
