Ondo Police Bust Human Trafficking Ring, Rescue Victim from Côte d’Ivoire

The Ondo State Police Command has dismantled a human trafficking syndicate operating in Okitipupa, rescuing a 21-year-old woman who was trafficked to Côte d’Ivoire and forced into sexual exploitation.

The breakthrough, according to the Command, followed a report filed on April 13, 2026, by a resident of Laju Street, Okitipupa, who raised alarm that her daughter had been lured out of Nigeria under false pretences.

Police investigations revealed that the victim was trafficked on February 22, 2026, by three suspects, Akinlaja Blessings, Johnson Ahomari, and one Grace, who is currently at large after being promised employment as a supermarket salesgirl.

However, the Command disclosed that the promise turned out to be a cover for exploitation.

“Unknown to her and her family, she was instead forced into prostitution. The victim disclosed that she was subjected to inhumane treatment and coerced into engaging in sexual activities,” the police stated.

The victim further recounted that she and others were administered substances by their handlers, allegedly to control and exploit them.

In a dramatic escape, the young woman fled the brothel on April 6, 2026, trekking through a bush path to a nearby town, where she contacted her family. She returned to Nigeria on April 11 and was immediately taken to the State Specialist Hospital in Okitipupa for urgent medical care due to the trauma she endured.

Acting on intelligence, police operatives tracked down and arrested two suspects, Akinlaja Blessings and Johnson Ahomari, who are currently in custody and assisting with investigations.

“Efforts are in top gear to apprehend the third suspect as well as to dismantle the wider trafficking network involved in this heinous crime. They will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigation,” the Command said.

Condemning the act, the Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, described it as “inhuman, exploitative, and a gross violation of human dignity,” assuring that all those involved would be brought to justice.

The Commissioner also urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant, especially regarding offers involving overseas travel.

“The Command urges parents and guardians to thoroughly verify opportunities presented to their children, Members of the public are encouraged to provide timely and credible information to security agencies,” he added.

He further expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for his “unwavering support, morale-boosting leadership, and invaluable guidance.”

The Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting vulnerable persons and ensuring perpetrators of human trafficking face the full weight of the law.
