LAGOS – The Nigerian entertainment landscape has been plunged into mourning following the transition of veteran Juju musician, Professor Yekini Kolawole Ajao, popularly known as Professor Y.K. Ajao.
The news of his passing was confirmed in a statement released by Prince Segun Genesis (PSG) on behalf of the Association of Juju Musicians of Nigeria (AJUMN), Lagos State Chapter. Describing the loss as a “monumental blow” to the industry, the association noted that Ajao was a cornerstone of the AJUMN community and a pioneer who helped shape the evolution of Juju music in Nigeria.
A Legacy of “Juju-Makossa”
Born in Iseyin, Oyo State, Professor Y.K. Ajao’s career spanned over five decades. He was famously dubbed the “Makossa King” after successfully fusing the Cameroonian Makossa rhythm with traditional Juju music—a move that redefined the genre in the late 1980s and 1990s. His chart-topping hits, including Makossa Superstar and Vigilante, cemented his status as an innovator who could compete with the likes of King Sunny Ade and Chief Ebenezer Obey.

In his later years, Ajao remained a vocal advocate for the unity of Juju musicians, often calling for stronger institutional support to preserve the genre’s heritage.
Sir Shina Peters Reacts
Afro-Juju creator, Sir Shina Peters, expressed profound shock over the demise of the man he described as more than just a colleague.
”Still hard to believe,” Sir Shina Peters said in a touching tribute. “You weren’t just a friend; you were my brother. Prof Y.K. Ajao, your sound, your spirit, and your presence were unforgettable. I’ll carry the memories always. Your legacy lives on, and you will never be forgotten.”
