The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially set the wheels of the next general election in motion. On Friday, the Commission’s Chairman, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), announced that the Presidential and National Assembly elections will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2027.
The announcement, made during a high-level meeting with political party leaders and civil society organizations in Abuja, marks the formal commencement of the 2027 electoral cycle. Prof. Amupitan also confirmed that the Governorship and State House of Assembly elections are scheduled to follow two weeks later, on Saturday, March 6, 2027.
Key Election Dates
- February 20, 2027: Presidential and National Assembly Elections.
- March 6, 2027: Governorship and State Houses of Assembly Elections.
Constitutional Compliance and Strategic Planning
Prof. Amupitan emphasized that the release of the timetable adheres to Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, which mandates the Commission to publish the Notice of Election at least 360 days before the poll.
Addressing recent rumors and “unofficial” schedules that had circulated on social media, the Chairman was firm:
“For some time now, this has been a subject of speculation. Such actions were misleading and orchestrated by detractors. Only INEC has the constitutional authority to fix election dates.”
The Chairman noted that the early release is a strategic move to allow political parties, security agencies, and the electorate adequate time—nearly a year—to prepare for the democratic exercise.

Major Priorities for 2027
As the 2027 cycle begins, INEC has identified four critical pillars to ensure the integrity of the vote:
- Technological Advancement: Expanded use of technology to bolster transparency in result collation.
- Voter Register Integrity: Continuous cleaning and updating of the National Register of Voters to eliminate ghost voters.
- Security Collaboration: Closer synergy with the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES).
- Voter Education: Early and aggressive civic engagement to curb voter apathy.
Off-Cycle Context
While the 2027 general elections will be nationwide, the Commission reminded stakeholders that governorship polls will not hold in Anambra, Bayelsa, Edo, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Ondo, and Osun States, as these states fall under the off-cycle election calendar.

Prof. Amupitan concluded by urging political parties to prioritize “internal democracy” during their upcoming primaries, warning that the Commission would strictly enforce compliance with all statutory timelines.
