Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has visited the family of the late Segun Awolowo Jr. to offer his heartfelt condolences over the recent passing of the distinguished lawyer and public servant. The visit, marked by deep emotion, underscored the significant loss felt not only by the Awolowo family but also by the entire nation.
Governor Abiodun described Segun Awolowo Jr., the grandson of the legendary Nigerian nationalist Chief Obafemi Awolowo, as an intelligent and gracious gentleman whose death leaves a profound void in the public and private spheres. During the condolence visit, the governor was warmly received by Awolowo’s widow, children, his elderly mother Hajia Abba Folawiyo, and other family members.

In a statement shared on his verified social media platform, the governor noted the atmosphere was heavy with sorrow, reflecting the magnitude of the loss felt by all who knew the late Awolowo. He said, “We received the news of his passing with heavy hearts. This is not only a national loss but a personal one. We will forever cherish the memories and lessons his life embodied.”

Segun Awolowo Jr., aged 62, who died on Thursday, served notably as the Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) from 2013 to 2021. His career spanned roles in legal practice and public administration, including service as Special Assistant on Traditional Institutions and Legal Matters under President Olusegun Obasanjo, and as Secretary for Social Development and Transport in the Federal Capital Territory Administration from 2007 to 2011.

The Awolowo family described him as a “painfully loyal servant to Nigeria,” applauding his life led with purpose, humility, and a generous spirit. Beyond his professional achievements, he was celebrated as a dedicated family man, steadfast friend, and a figure of humility and integrity whose legacy extends far beyond his legal and governmental contributions.

Governor Abiodun extended his deepest sympathies to Segun Awolowo’s wife, children, and the entire Awolowo family, praying for the repose of his soul and strength for all who mourn him. “May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace,” he added.
The passing of Segun Awolowo Jr. marks the loss of a valuable torchbearer of the Awolowo legacy, a family that has long been influential in Nigeria’s political, social, and cultural development. The governor’s visit and words serve as a poignant reminder of Awolowo’s enduring impact on Nigeria’s public service and national progress.
This condolence visit reflects Ogun State’s recognition of the immense contributions of Segun Awolowo Jr. and the high esteem in which he was held by leaders and citizens alike. Governor Abiodun’s public mourning also echoes sentiments expressed across the country, as many Nigerians recall the esteemed public servant’s role in advancing national development and justice.

This article honors the memory of a remarkable Nigerian whose life was marked by dedication to public good and service to his country, embodying the ideals of his grandfather, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, one of Nigeria’s foremost statesmen and nationalists.
