Owerri, Imo State – Tensions ran high on Friday at the prestigious Odenigbo Lecture hosted at the Assumpta Catholic Cathedral in Owerri as Mallam Nasir El-Rufai was abruptly escorted out amid a vehement protest by a large assembly of angry Imo indigenes.
The protesters expressed their strong disapproval of El-Rufai’s presence at the intellectual gathering, arguing that the former Kaduna State governor lacked the moral authority to speak on such a revered platform deeply entrenched in Igbo cultural heritage. Demonstrators accused El-Rufai of previously engaging in divisive campaigns perceived as hostile to the Igbo people, which fueled their outrage.
The protestors also leveled warnings against Peter Obi, who had facilitated El-Rufai’s invitation to the event. They cautioned Obi against perceived attempts to exploit the esteemed Odenigbo platform for political gains, underscoring the imperative to uphold the dignity and sanctity of Igbo identity without compromise.
For security reasons, concerted efforts by the organizers and security agencies resulted in the swift removal of El-Rufai from the venue, preventing potential escalation. The protest highlighted lingering regional sensitivities and underscored the deep cultural pride and vigilance of the Imo people in safeguarding their heritage.
The Odenigbo Lecture, traditionally a forum celebrating Igbo intellectualism and culture, came under intense scrutiny, with many stakeholders urging all participants to respect the cultural significance of the event and avoid politicizing the platform.
This incident marks a significant moment in the ongoing discourse around Igbo socio-political identity and the perceived intersections with broader Nigerian political currents. The event further signals the complexities faced by public figures in navigating regional sentiments in contemporary Nigeria .
