Abuja, FCT – Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar joined a distinguished gathering of patriots yesterday, Saturday, May 31, 2025, at the Abuja Continental Hotel for a compelling birthday lecture in honor of former Rivers State Governor and Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, who recently turned 60.
The lecture, aptly titled “Weaponization of Poverty as a Means of Underdevelopment: A Case Study of Nigeria,” sparked robust discussions among Nigeria’s political and intellectual elite, underscoring the urgent need to address the nation’s pervasive economic challenges.
Atiku Abubakar, reflecting on the event, described it as a “great and thought-provoking” occasion. His presence, alongside other prominent figures like the Emir of Kano and former CBN Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, highlighted the non-partisan concern over the deepening poverty crisis in Nigeria.
The discourse delved into how poverty is allegedly leveraged as a tool for underdevelopment, hindering progress and exacerbating societal woes. Speakers at the event, including Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, shared poignant insights, with the Emir revealing that he “did not know poverty until I became Emir,” emphasizing the stark reality of rural destitution beyond mere statistics. Former Governor El-Rufai, also present, lamented the recurring pattern of Nigerians electing leaders who “only know how to grab power but don’t know what to do with it.”
The gathering coincided with ongoing political realignments, as key opposition figures including Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, have been involved in recent closed-door meetings focused on forming a broad-based opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections. These discussions reportedly centered on critical issues such as poverty, insecurity, and governance failures, particularly in Northern Nigeria, with implicit criticisms directed at the current administration’s handling of these challenges.
The birthday lecture, therefore, transcended a mere celebration, transforming into a crucial platform for national introspection and a renewed call for empathetic and effective leadership to combat the weaponization of poverty and steer Nigeria towards sustainable development. While no official communiqué was released from the lecture, the depth of the discussions signals a growing momentum for political re-evaluation and a collective push for solutions to Nigeria’s pressing socio-economic predicament.
