The Kwara State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of five suspects following a wave of violent disturbances in Omu-Aran, Irepodun Local Government Area, over the past two days.
The unrest began on May 25, 2025, after police operatives from the Anti-Kidnapping Squad (AKS) arrested Azeez “A-Z”, a notorious drug dealer and suspected arms trafficker, based on credible intelligence. However, while transporting the suspect, an angry mob intercepted the officers, aiding his escape. Police personnel withdrew tactically to reassess the situation.
By 4:30 PM, the same group mobilized and attempted to storm the local police station but were repelled. Undeterred, the hoodlums later attacked the Olomu’s Palace, setting ablaze a motorcycle belonging to the monarch’s police orderly.
The violence continued into May 26, when a faction of the youths targeted the Olomu Aperan Microfinance Bank at 2:00 PM. Armed with stones and other weapons, they vandalized the bank’s CCTV cameras, signboard, and three parked vehicles before fleeing upon police reinforcement. Bank staff were safely evacuated, and five suspects linked to the attack were apprehended.
CP Adekimi Ojo, the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, has ordered heightened patrols and surveillance to prevent further breakdown of order. Investigations are ongoing, and the police urge residents to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information, and cooperate with security agencies.
The Kwara State Police Command, according to SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the Police PRO, has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and protecting lives and property.
