As Nigeria approaches the next electoral cycle, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has charged political parties and candidates contesting the upcoming general elections to strictly honor the commitments outlined in the National Peace Accord.
Speaking in Abuja during the formal signing ceremony of the First National Peace Accord, Prof. Amupitan emphasized that the ultimate credibility of the polls relies just as heavily on the conduct of political actors as it does on the electoral umpire. He stressed that campaigns must transition away from character assassination and inflammatory rhetoric toward robust, issue-based dialogue.

Echoing these sentiments, the Chairman of the National Peace Committee (NPC), former Head of State General Abdulsalami A. Abubakar—represented by General Martin Luther Agwai—noted that the committee has continuously fostered peaceful democratic transitions through structured mediation since 2015. Security representatives, including the Nigeria Police Force, also warned political leaders against mobilizing youth for violence, assuring the public of an impartial law enforcement framework throughout the campaign and voting periods.
