WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump issued a scorched-earth warning to Tehran on Monday, threatening to “completely obliterate” Iran’s critical energy infrastructure and its primary oil export hub, Kharg Island, if a ceasefire agreement is not reached “shortly.”
In a characteristic volley of Truth Social posts, the President declared that while “great progress” has been made in backchannel negotiations, the United States is prepared to end its military operations—which he termed a “lovely stay”—with a final, devastating blow. The threat specifically targets Iran’s electric generating plants, oil wells, and water desalination facilities.
The ultimatum comes exactly one month after the February 28 joint U.S.-Israeli offensive, dubbed Operation Epic Fury, which targeted Iranian leadership and nuclear sites. Since then, the region has been gripped by a high-stakes standoff that has seen the Strait of Hormuz effectively shuttered, sending global Brent crude prices soaring toward $116 a barrel.
”Open for Business”
Trump’s latest demand centers on the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. “If for any reason a deal is not shortly reached… and if the Hormuz Strait is not immediately ‘Open for Business,’ we will conclude our ‘stay’ in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all of their assets,” Trump wrote.
The President claimed the U.S. is currently in “serious discussions” with what he described as a “new and more reasonable regime” in Tehran. However, the Iranian Foreign Ministry has publicly dismissed these claims, labeling the U.S. peace proposals “irrational” and “unrealistic.”
Military Build-up and Economic Stakes
The rhetoric coincides with a significant surge in U.S. military presence. Approximately 10,000 ground troops, including elements of the 82nd Airborne Division and the U.S. Marines, have recently deployed to the region. In a Sunday interview with the Financial Times, Trump even floated the possibility of a ground seizure of Kharg Island—which handles over 90% of Iran’s oil exports—stating, “Maybe we take Kharg Island, maybe we don’t… we have a lot of options.”
Diplomatic efforts continue behind the scenes, led by a “Committee of Four” comprising Pakistan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. Pakistani officials have expressed optimism about hosting direct talks in Islamabad, though a firm date remains elusive.
As the April 6 deadline set by Washington approaches, the world remains on edge, watching whether this “maximum pressure” tactic will force a diplomatic breakthrough or ignite a total collapse of Iranian infrastructure.
