WASHINGTON D.C. – In a major shake-up of his administration’s top brass, President Donald Trump has fired U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, effective immediately. The President announced on Thursday that Bondi would be replaced in an acting capacity by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, a former personal defense attorney who represented Trump in several high-profile criminal cases.
The dismissal, delivered via a Truth Social post, marks the second cabinet-level exit in less than a month, following the ouster of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in March.
The Epstein Controversy and ‘Failed’ Prosecutions
While Trump publicly described Bondi as a “Great American Patriot” who oversaw a “massive crackdown on crime,” sources within the administration indicate that the relationship had soured over several key issues.
Bondi has faced intense scrutiny from both sides of the aisle regarding the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) handling of files related to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Critics accused her office of missing congressional deadlines and “botching” the redaction of documents, which accidentally exposed the names of some victims.
Furthermore, Trump was reportedly frustrated by Bondi’s inability to secure convictions against his political rivals. Efforts to prosecute former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James recently stalled or were dismissed by federal judges, leading to a “crisis of confidence” in the Oval Office regarding her leadership.

Enter Todd Blanche
The appointment of Todd Blanche as Acting Attorney General signals a shift toward a more aggressive legal posture. Blanche is a well-known figure in Trump’s inner circle, having served as his lead counsel during the “hush money” trial in New York and other post-presidential legal battles.
”Todd is an excellent attorney who will be a crucial leader in the Justice Department, fixing what has been a broken System of Justice for far too long,” Trump stated.
Blanche, who has served as Deputy Attorney General since early 2025, took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his gratitude, stating he would focus on “backing the blue” and enforcing the law.

Political Reaction
The move has drawn sharp rebukes from Democratic lawmakers. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) labeled Bondi’s tenure a “cesspool of corruption,” while Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) criticized the administration for “undermining trust in the justice system.”
As Blanche takes the helm, speculation is mounting that Trump may eventually nominate Lee Zeldin, the current head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as the permanent successor. For now, the DOJ enters a period of transition as it navigates the fallout of the Epstein files and the President’s renewed demands for “accountability” against his adversaries.
