WOODBURY, N.J. — A former Gloucester County middle school teacher already facing severe allegations of maintaining a sexual relationship with an eighth-grade student has been hit with a fresh wave of disturbing charges, including the manufacturing of child sexual abuse material.
Ashley Fisler, 36, of Washington Township, was handed a comprehensive 12-count superseding indictment by a grand jury on Wednesday, June 24. The upgraded charges significantly elevate the legal jeopardy for the former educator, who previously taught at Orchard Valley Middle School.
From Misconduct to Manufacture
The investigation into Fisler began in March, initially resulting in eight criminal counts. However, prosecutors with the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office successfully sought a grand jury indictment this week that introduces several severe new offenses.
The updated 12-count indictment now includes:
- First-degree manufacturing of child sexual abuse material
- First-degree sexual assault of a minor (multiple counts)
- Second-degree pattern of official misconduct
- Third-degree possession of child sexual abuse material
- Third-degree distribution of obscenity to a minor
Under New Jersey state law, each first-degree conviction carries a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in state prison, meaning Fisler faces the prospect of decades behind bars if convicted on all counts.
A Trail of Thousands of Text Messages
According to court documents, the allegations stem from a former student who is now an adult. The victim came forward to law enforcement to report an unlawful, ongoing relationship with Fisler that began in 2021 while he was still an eighth-grader in her classroom.
The victim detailed multiple sexual encounters to investigators, alleging they occurred both inside Fisler’s personal vehicle and directly on school grounds within her classroom.
Central to the state’s case is a massive digital footprint. Investigators reportedly recovered a staggering archive of roughly 7,500 pages of text messages exchanged between Fisler and the student. Prosecutors allege the communication remained highly active and deeply explicit even after the victim moved on to high school.
In one particularly damaging exchange highlighted by prosecutors, the former student explicitly told Fisler that the relationship had left him “mentally broken.”
Defense Claims Lack of Context
Fisler’s defense attorney, Rocco Cipparone, has aggressively pushed back against the state’s narrative, mounting a defense centered on the interpretation of the digital evidence.
Cipparone has argued in court that the prosecution’s case relies heavily on cherry-picked evidence, asserting that the texts cited by investigators are “selective” and “salacious” fragments that completely lack proper context. The defense maintains that the state lacks the concrete evidence required to substantiate the full scope of the heavy allegations.
Fisler remains entangled in the judicial process as the Gloucester County Superior Court prepares for the next phase of pretrial hearings.
