Prince William Outpaces King Charles in Wealth as Duchy Wealth Hits £1.2B

​LONDON — Newly published financial accounts reveal that Prince William has officially become wealthier than his father, King Charles III, driven by a massive surge in the valuation of the Duchy of Cornwall.

​According to the latest annual Sovereign Grant reports, the Prince of Wales now oversees a private estate valued at an estimated £1.2 billion. William inherited the lucrative portfolio in 2022 upon becoming heir to the throne. The disclosures show the estate generated a private income of £21.6 million for the Prince during the 2025–26 financial year alone.

​Since assuming his new title, William’s tax contributions have also entered the spotlight. The reports indicate he has paid more than £20 million in taxes over the last few years, including £7.76 million in income and capital gains tax for the 2024–25 fiscal year, following an £8.34 million payment the year prior.

​By contrast, King Charles’ personal fortune—while substantial—was recently pegged at £640 million by the Sunday Times Rich List. Though the Monarch’s wealth grew by £30 million over the past year, it remains roughly half that of his son’s sprawling duchy assets.

​Financial Transparency and Reform

​The Sovereign Grant, which represents the taxpayer-funded taxpayer pool allocated by the UK Treasury to support official royal duties, has faced intense scrutiny in recent years. In response, both the King and the Prince of Wales have voluntarily disclosed their private tax payments in a bid to modernize the monarchy and boost financial transparency.

​As part of this shifting financial strategy, Prince William recently announced a significant policy change regarding the estate’s revenues. Moving forward, the Prince will no longer personally benefit from the £1.5 million in annual rental income generated by the former Dartmoor Prison site.

​A Shift in Royal Residences

​In tandem with the financial disclosures, Buckingham Palace confirmed a major shift in the King’s long-term residential plans. King Charles and Queen Camilla will not move into Buckingham Palace after its massive £370 million refurbishment program concludes next year.

​Instead, Clarence House will remain the King’s official London residence for the duration of his reign. Buckingham Palace will pivot exclusively to serving as the central administrative headquarters of the British monarchy.

​”His Majesty retains huge affection for Buckingham Palace and a deep respect for its role in royal and public life,” a palace spokesperson stated, adding that the iconic landmark will remain a “buzzing hive of royal activity” for state events and public engagements.

​Despite the administrative shakeups and complex balance sheets, it remains business as usual for the working royals. The Prince and Princess of Wales were recently seen maintaining their public-facing duties at Royal Ascot in Berkshire, arriving by carriage to greet cheering crowds.
