IBADAN – In a major political shift ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has officially emerged as the presidential candidate of the Allied People’s Movement (APM).
The development unfolded on Saturday, May 30, 2026, during the party’s national primary held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, where party delegates and the national leadership unanimously endorsed the governor to lead their flag in the upcoming presidential race.
Accepting the nomination, Governor Makinde declared his readiness to pioneer an issue-based campaign tailored toward offering practical solutions to Nigeria’s complex socio-economic challenges. He emphasized that his vision for the country hinges on integrity, institutional discipline, and sweeping structural reforms that directly impact the everyday lives of citizens.
A Vision for Economic and Resource Rebirth
A central pillar of Makinde’s acceptance speech focused on resource control and restructuring the nation’s oil wealth. The governor expressed dissatisfaction with the current economic realities of ordinary citizens, arguing that Nigerians have yet to reap the tangible benefits of being an oil-producing nation.
”Nigerians must benefit from the fact that we are an oil-producing nation, just as citizens of other resource-producing countries benefit from their natural wealth,” Makinde stated.
To achieve this, the APM flagbearer promised a complete overhaul of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited. He pledged to transition the state-owned oil firm into a “lean, efficient, and commercially driven institution” through robust corporate restructuring, transparency, and strategic international partnerships.
Shifting the 2027 Political Landscape
The entry of Governor Makinde into the presidential fray under the APM umbrella introduces an intriguing dynamic into the 2027 race. Known for his infrastructure drive and technocratic approach to governance in Oyo State, Makinde’s cross-party appeal is expected to rally a coalition of third-force political movements and undecided voters looking for an alternative to the dominant political parties.
National leaders of the APM expressed strong optimism following the primaries, describing Makinde as the ideal bridge builder capable of uniting a fractured nation and reviving its struggling economy.
Campaign strategists close to the governor indicate that the APM campaign will soon roll out a comprehensive national policy document focusing heavily on decentralization, economic diversification, and civil service reforms.
