After months of speculation and a tense, protracted negotiation period, Spanish midfield maestro Rodri has officially finalized his move from Manchester City to Barcelona. The 30-year-old, who captained Spain to World Cup glory this summer, has signed a four-year contract with the Blaugrana, tying him to the Camp Nou until 2030.
The deal, valued at approximately £65.4 million (€76.5 million including potential bonuses), brings to an end one of the summer’s most high-profile transfer sagas. Barcelona successfully secured the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner after having two previous bids—reportedly of £40 million and £55 million—rejected by the English champions.
A New Chapter at the Camp Nou
During his official presentation in Catalonia on Tuesday, Rodri expressed his eagerness to embrace a fresh challenge under manager Hansi Flick. “I’m very happy and excited about this new stage in my career,” the midfielder stated. “I’ve come to a hugely ambitious club that really suits my personality, and I’ll try to help in every way I can to achieve our objectives.”
Rodri joins a Barcelona squad already brimming with familiar faces from his international successes, including young stars Lamine Yamal and Pedri. He is also set to link up with recent arrivals Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, forming what many believe will be a formidable new-look side for the upcoming La Liga campaign.
A Legacy Left Behind in Manchester
Rodri leaves Manchester City after seven illustrious seasons, having firmly established himself as a club legend and arguably the finest holding midfielder in the world. During his 298 appearances for the club, he played a central role in 14 major trophy wins, including four Premier League titles and the historic 2023 Champions League triumph, where he scored the decisive goal in the final against Inter Milan.
In an emotional farewell message, the Spaniard reflected on his time in Manchester: “City didn’t just make me grow as a player; they made me grow as a human. I saw my brother graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University, and I could see my girlfriend working for the NHS. Manchester shaped my whole life.”
While injuries disrupted his final two seasons at the Etihad, Rodri’s form this summer served as a poignant reminder of his elite status. As the newly crowned Golden Ball winner of the 2026 World Cup, he arrives in Spain with his reputation as one of the sport’s greatest tacticians fully intact.
