Nigerian street-pop sensation Habeeb Okikiola, widely known as Portable, has expressed a firm intention to return to the classroom, years after his studies at Kwara State Polytechnic were cut short by financial constraints.
The “Zazu” crooner, known for his energetic performances and candid personality, shared his educational journey in a preview of the Honest Brunch Podcast, released on Monday. Despite his massive success in the music industry, Portable admitted that leaving the polytechnic remains one of his most significant personal regrets.
A Past Defined by Struggle
Reflecting on his time at the institution, where he studied Business Administration under the school’s indigene quota, the singer recounted the hardships that derailed his academic ambitions. Portable revealed that he was forced to balance his studies with the grueling task of hawking sachet water to survive.
”I go still finish school as I dey like this. I no finish school,” Portable stated, explaining that a lack of financial sponsorship ultimately made it impossible for him to continue paying his fees.
Rising Above the “Olodo” Label
Beyond his academic struggles, the singer opened up about his family dynamics. He shared that he was once considered the least academically gifted—or “olodo”—among his siblings. However, he noted that the tables have turned: while he once struggled to find support, he has now become the primary provider for his family, including his father.
”Person wey dem dey call olodo for my family na me still dey feed my papa now,” he said.
A Renewed Vision for Education
This is not the first time the singer has mentioned his desire to return to school. As far back as November 2025, the artiste had publicly signaled his intent to further his education, citing a need to better understand the professional and business side of the music industry. He has previously emphasized that he wants to be a role model for his children, ensuring they do not face the same criticisms he endured regarding his education.
While acknowledging that formal qualifications are not the only path to success, Portable maintained that education remains a personal priority. “It is not a must you finish school before you get am. You fit go get am from outside and come back finish school. I go still finish school as I dey like this,” he asserted.
As of now, the singer’s claims regarding his former student status at Kwara State Polytechnic remain unverified by the institution. Regardless, his public commitment to self-improvement marks a reflective chapter for the controversial entertainer as he seeks to balance his flourishing music career with his academic aspirations.
