Oyo State is entering a new era of environmental governance as the government transitions from a monthly cleanup model to a rigorous daily enforcement system.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Ademola Aderinto, announced the policy shift during a press briefing marking his first 100 days in office. He emphasized that the era of waiting for a single day in a month to clean the environment is over, as the state moves toward a proactive “daily responsibility” culture.
To anchor this new regime, the Ministry has re-engaged 930 environmental personnel, including vanguards, sweepers, and waste packers. These workers have been enrolled in the Oyo State Health Insurance Scheme (OYSHIA) to ensure their welfare while they maintain cleaner roads through twice-daily operations. Governor Seyi Makinde has further bolstered this capacity by procuring two new compactor trucks to expedite waste evacuation across the state.
Innovation is at the heart of this reform. The Ministry recently launched the Oyo Soro Soke (Oyo SSS) Environmental Whistleblower platform. This mobile and WhatsApp-integrated tool allows residents to report environmental violations in real-time, fostering community-led governance. ValidViewNetwork reports that this initiative is part of a broader “rescue mission” to prevent indiscriminate dumping on medians, which has historically led to flash floods in Ibadan. Furthermore, ValidViewNetwork reports indicate that the government has coupled these digital tools with a first-of-its-kind waste segregation system now active across government offices.
Hon. Aderinto also highlighted achievements in climate action, including the regulation of charcoal production and the planting of trees to commemorate World Earth Day. With increased media engagement and public advisories on health risks like Cholera and Lassa Fever, the Ministry is positioning Oyo as a leader in sustainable urban management.
