ABEOKUTA – In a poignant ceremony held on Thursday, the Ogun State Police Command disbursed a total of ₦30,552,851.16 to the families and next-of-kin of police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The presentation, held at the Command Headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, was presided over by the State Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni. The initiative serves as a cornerstone of the activities marking the fourth day of the ongoing 2026 National Police Week, a week dedicated to honoring service and strengthening community ties.
Speaking on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, CP Ojajuni emphasized that the financial support is more than just a statutory payout; it is a “solemn vow” to ensure the sacrifices of officers who paid the ultimate price are never forgotten.
”This gesture is aimed at honoring the bravery of our fallen colleagues while providing a vital lifeline for the families they left behind,” Ojajuni stated. “It reinforces the enduring bond between the Force and its personnel, both serving and departed.”
Commitment to Welfare
According to a statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the funds were processed through the Force’s robust insurance and welfare schemes, including the Group Life Assurance and the IGP Family Welfare Scheme.
The disbursement reflects the current administration’s “Welfare-First” policy. Under IGP Tunji Disu, the Force has significantly accelerated the processing of death benefits, aiming to reduce the bureaucratic delays that have historically plagued the families of deceased officers.
A Week of Commemoration
The 2026 National Police Week has seen a flurry of activities across Ogun State aimed at bridging the gap between the police and the public. In addition to the disbursement, the Command has engaged in:
- Community Outreach: Medical screenings and food donations in local government areas.
- Town Hall Meetings: Collaborative sessions with community leaders to discuss local security.
- Sporting Events: Friendly matches between officers and youth groups to foster trust.
Families in attendance expressed profound gratitude, noting that the timely disbursement would provide much-needed relief for the education of children and household stability.
The week-long celebration is expected to culminate in a grand parade in Abuja, where the presidency is scheduled to recognize the Force’s contributions to national stability.
