Abeokuta: Court Grants Bail to NYSC Official Linked to Corps Member’s Death

​ABEOKUTA – An Isabo Magistrates’ Court sitting in Abeokuta has granted bail to Abass Olalekan, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Local Government Inspector (LGI) for Abeokuta South, following his arraignment in connection with the death of a female corps member, Victoria Ariyo.

​Olalekan, popularly known as “Ola Kamara,” appeared before Magistrate A.K. Araba on Monday, facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and the attempted procurement of an abortion. The prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Lawrence Olu-Balogun, alleged that the defendant committed the offences between January and March 2026 at the Ikereku and Laderin areas of the state capital.

​The case follows the tragic passing of Victoria Ariyo, a corps member serving in Abeokuta South, who reportedly died last Tuesday from complications linked to a terminated pregnancy. She has since been interred at the Kobape Cemetery.

​Defense Cites “Weak Evidence”

​During the proceedings, Olalekan pleaded not guilty to the charges. His lead counsel, Bunmi Adelabu, argued for bail in liberal terms, emphasizing that the defendant is presumed innocent under Section 36(5) of the 1999 Constitution.

​Adelabu criticized the prosecution’s case, describing the evidence as “weak” and “lacking critical backing.” The defense pointed out that while the charges alleged an attempt to procure an abortion with drugs, the prosecution failed to name any specific medication or provide a statement from a medical professional.

​”If you are to give somebody [drugs], where is the nurse or doctor involved?” Adelabu queried. He further noted that the charges—brought under Sections 516 and 230 of the Criminal Code—are bailable and do not carry capital punishment.

​Court Ruling and NYSC Reaction

​The prosecution listed five witnesses for the trial; however, the absence of four witnesses drew concern from the court. Magistrate Araba questioned the feasibility of proceeding with only one witness present before delivering the ruling on the bail application.

​The court granted Olalekan bail in the sum of ₦500,000 with two sureties in like sum. The Magistrate ordered that one surety must be a blood relative, while the other must be gainfully employed. Pending the perfection of these bail conditions, Olalekan was ordered to be remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre.

​The NYSC management, through a statement by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, confirmed that it is cooperating fully with security agencies. The scheme reiterated its “zero tolerance” for misconduct and maintained that the welfare and dignity of corps members remain its highest priority.

​The case has been adjourned until April 14, 2026, for further hearing.
