​LIVERPOOL, England — Liverpool Football Club are set to open formal negotiations with former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola to take over as the club’s new head coach. The rapid move comes less than 48 hours after Fenway Sports Group (FSG) ruthlessly dismissed Arne Slot on Saturday following a turbulent, fifth-place Premier League campaign.

​The 43-year-old Spaniard has emerged as the clear frontrunner to succeed Slot, who was axed just one year after leading Liverpool to their historic 20th English league title.

​The Anfield hierarchy reportedly reached an internal consensus to pivot toward a more aggressive, high-intensity, and proactive tactical blueprint. This desire for “heavy metal” football directly mirrors Iraola’s philosophy, which relies heavily on high pressing and rapid verticality.

​Crucially, the pursuit is championed by Liverpool’s Sporting Director, Richard Hughes. Hughes possesses a close professional relationship with Iraola, having been the technical director who brought the Basque coach to Bournemouth in 2023.

​Slot’s sudden departure marks a stunning fall from grace. Arriving in 2024 as Jürgen Klopp’s successor, the Dutchman achieved immediate legendary status by reclaiming the Premier League crown in his debut season.
