MAIDUGURI, NIGERIA — In a major victory for counter-terrorism efforts in the North East, the Nigerian Navy has apprehended a high-profile suspected terrorist collaborator, Baba Saidu Abdullahi, following a high-tech intelligence operation in the volatile Lake Chad basin.
The breakthrough, which occurred on Monday, June 1, 2026, was made public in a statement released on Tuesday by the newly appointed Director of Naval Information, Captain Abiodun Folorunsho.
The Eye in the Sky
According to military authorities, Abdullahi’s run ended during a routine Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) mission conducted by personnel from Naval Base Lake Chad (NBLC). The operation leveraged advanced tactical drones to monitor known hostile corridors in the region.
Naval operators initially spotted the suspect emerging from a location that intelligence had previously flagged as an active terrorist hideout. Rather than moving in immediately, the naval team maintained aerial surveillance, gathering undeniable footage of Abdullahi actively interacting with armed terrorist elements before leaving the immediate area.
Real-Time Tracking and Capture
Utilizing the real-time data feed from the tactical drone, security forces tracked Abdullahi’s movements seamlessly across the difficult terrain. He was monitored trailing from the Dumba axis straight into the operational perimeter of Charlie Company, 196 Amphibious Battalion, where ground troops closed in and intercepted him.
A thorough search of the suspect yielded several personal effects and incriminating items, which have been seized as vital evidence for the ongoing investigation.
Choking the Supply Lines
Preliminary investigations have unmasked Abdullahi as a vital cog in the insurgent machinery. Intelligence reports suggest he frequently shuttled between Dumba and Baga Town, acting as a covert liaison for terrorist networks operating within the Lake Chad regional basin.
Crucially, initial findings point to Abdullahi being heavily involved in providing logistical support to the insurgents. He is suspected of handling the procurement and covert movement of essential supplies, a lifeline that keeps the remnants of these terror cells operational.
”The operation underscores the growing role of intelligence, surveillance, and technology-driven operations in enhancing situational awareness and supporting ongoing counter-terrorism efforts in the Lake Chad region,” Captain Folorunsho stated.
Joint Force Push
Following his preliminary interrogation, the Navy handed Abdullahi over to the appropriate military authorities under the umbrella of Operation HADIN KAI for deeper interrogation and formal prosecution.
The Nigerian Navy reiterated its unwavering commitment to deploying its full array of technological and maritime assets to deny terrorists any freedom of movement, promising to sustain the momentum until total peace is restored to the North East.
