Muscatine mass shooting: six family members killed; gunman dies by suicide

Muscatine, Iowa — A domestic-related shooting left six members of a single family dead and the suspected gunman dead by suicide on Monday, June 1, Muscatine police said.

Officers responding to reports of gunfire shortly after noon found four people fatally shot inside a residence, Police Chief Anthony Kies said at a news briefing. The suspected shooter, identified as 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland of Muscatine, had fled the home before police arrived.

Police located McFarland on the city’s riverfront trail near a pedestrian bridge. While officers were engaging him, he took his own life, Kies said.

Following information that there may have been additional victims, investigators found two other men shot — one inside a nearby home and another at a local business. Authorities said all six victims were believed to be family members of the shooter; their identities have not been released. An ABC affiliate reported that at least two victims were children, though police have not publicly confirmed ages.

Kies described the preliminary investigation as indicating the shootings “stemmed from a domestic-related dispute,” but provided no further detail on a motive or what precipitated the violence. Police said their probe remains active, with investigators processing multiple scenes and interviewing witnesses.

The Muscatine community reacted with shock and grief. Local officials urged residents to avoid the area while police continued investigative work and to seek support from community resources. School officials temporarily adjusted schedules for students and staff as a precautionary measure, citing difficulties in coordinating family notifications.
