
Operatives of the Nigerian Navy have arrested five suspects and confiscated about 42,000 litres of suspected illegally refined petroleum products during a patrol operation in Ilaje Local Government Area.
The operation, carried out by personnel of the Forward Operating Base (FOB), Igbokoda, targeted criminal activities in the riverine communities of Ondo State.
Commanding Officer of the base, Captain Andy Alemongwa, disclosed that the breakthrough followed actionable intelligence gathered from strategic naval outposts, including Awoye. He explained that the intelligence led to the tracking and interception of a vessel suspected to be conveying illegally refined petroleum products, believed to be Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), alongside a fibre boat.
According to him, the operation resulted in the arrest of five individuals connected to the illicit trade and the recovery of the large volume of fuel.
Captain Alemongwa described the success as a reflection of the Navy’s sustained crackdown on crude oil theft and illegal bunkering, in line with the directive of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, whose leadership prioritises zero tolerance for maritime crimes.
He noted that both federal and state authorities have stepped up measures to combat illegal petroleum activities in riverine areas, including initiatives aimed at providing alternative livelihoods for youths.
The naval commander also issued a warning to those involved in illegal dealings, stressing that enhanced surveillance and intelligence operations would ensure offenders are apprehended.
