ACCRA – Nigeria’s dominance in continental track and field was reaffirmed on Wednesday as the nation’s mixed 4x400m relay team stormed to a magnificent gold medal finish at the ongoing African Athletics Championships.
The Nigerian quartet, comprising the explosive Ezekiel Asuquo, the resilient Toheebat Jimoh, rising star Victor Sampson, and the veteran anchor Patience Okon-George, delivered a tactical masterclass to secure the top spot on the podium. The team clocked a commanding time of 3:16.44, leaving their rivals trailing in a high-octane race that brought the stadium to its feet.
The victory was hard-fought, as Nigeria faced stiff competition from Botswana and Kenya. Botswana secured the silver medal with a strong performance, while Kenya settled for the bronze.

The highlight of the race was the veteran composure of Patience Okon-George. Known for her experience on the international stage, Okon-George took the baton for the final leg and maintained a gap that the chasing pack simply could not close. Earlier legs by Asuquo and Sampson provided the necessary pace, while Jimoh’s transition proved pivotal in maintaining Nigeria’s momentum against a surging Botswana team.

This gold medal marks a significant milestone for “Making of Champions” and the Nigerian athletic program, signaling a successful integration of seasoned veterans with emerging young talents. Sports analysts suggest this performance bodes well for Nigeria’s aspirations on the global stage later this year, particularly in the relay events where the country has historically excelled.

With this win, Nigeria solidifies its position at the top of the medals table, fueling hopes for more podium finishes as the championships enter their final days.
