Lagos, Nigeria — In a series of high-stakes operations across the country, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has dismantled multiple attempts by international drug trafficking organizations to export illicit substances to Europe and Oceania. The week-long crackdown resulted in the recovery of massive consignments of opioids, methamphetamine, and cannabis, hidden in everything from winter jackets to skin cream containers.
Airport Foils European Smuggling Routes
The Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos became a central battleground this week. On Friday, March 20, 2026, NDLEA operatives intercepted 37-year-old Friday Ehianuka as he prepared to board an Ethiopian Airlines flight to Rome. A search of his luggage revealed 2,698 pills of high-potency tramadol (225mg) hidden inside skin light body cream containers. Ehianuka, a resident of Milan, admitted he was promised payment in Euros upon successful delivery.

Just two days earlier, another Milan resident, Christian Agbonhese, was apprehended while attempting to board a Lufthansa flight. Operatives discovered a staggering 28,470 opioid pills—including tramadol and tapentadol—stuffed into the linings of two large winter jackets.
Logistics and Courier Interceptions
The ingenuity of traffickers continues to be met with advanced detection. At a Lagos courier firm, officers intercepted:
1.Methamphetamine (158g): Concealed within the double walls of a shipping carton destined for New Zealand.
2.“Loud” Cannabis (1kg): A potent strain shipped from the United States, hidden in a carton bound for local distribution.
Nationwide Sweeps: From Kano to the FCT
The agency’s reach extended far beyond the capital. In Kano, two suspects were arrested with nearly 200kg of “skunk” (cannabis), while in Lagos, a raid in the Ijora area and an interception on the 3rd Mainland Bridge led to the recovery of over 30,000 bottles of codeine-based syrup.

In the Federal Capital Territory, a commercial bus was intercepted along the Gwagwalada expressway. A meticulous search of the vehicle’s body compartments revealed 91,840 tramadol pills, leading to the immediate arrest of the driver. Other significant seizures were reported in Kaduna, where over 580,000 pills were recovered, and in Adamawa, where six suspects were detained in connection with a truckload of tramadol.
A “Balanced Approach” to Drug Control
Beyond the arrests, the NDLEA has intensified its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) initiative. Sensitization lectures were held throughout the week at several institutions, including Girls High School in Abakaliki and St. John’s Academy in Ogun State, aiming to curb drug demand through education.

Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, praised the officers for their vigilance. He urged the various commands to remain relentless in their “balanced approach,” targeting both the supply chains of traffickers and the social roots of drug abuse.
