In a major breakthrough in the ongoing fight against illicit drug trafficking, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has apprehended a suspect transporting 43,980 capsules of tramadol concealed within two vehicle fuel tanks.
The arrest took place in the Wukari area of Taraba State, following an intelligence-led operation. According to the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the suspect had traveled to Onitsha, Anambra State, specifically to procure the large fuel tanks for the purpose of hiding the illicit consignment.
The suspect reportedly managed to bypass multiple security checkpoints while traveling from Anambra State to Taraba State. However, his “sophisticated” attempt at concealment was ultimately thwarted by vigilant NDLEA operatives who discovered the drugs packed neatly inside the tanks.
The agency released a video documenting the moment the tanks were opened, revealing the hidden cache and effectively bringing the drug trafficking enterprise to an end.
This recovery is the latest in a series of high-profile seizures by the NDLEA as it continues to intensify its “War Against Drug Abuse” (WADA) campaign. The agency has recently reported several similar successes, including the interception of hundreds of thousands of tramadol pills in other regions of the country, and has vowed to continue dismantling trafficking networks by targeting both the supply chains and the increasingly complex methods traffickers use to evade detection.
The suspect is currently in custody and is expected to face prosecution as the investigation into his operations continues.
