The Anambra State Government has intensified its environmental enforcement efforts, sealing several student hostels, business premises, churches, and a major market in Awka South Local Government Area for violating state sanitation regulations. The action follows a statewide lockdown on Saturday, July 4, 2026, which was designated as a day for desilting and waste evacuation to combat flooding and environmental degradation.
Enforcement and Structural Safety
Operatives from the “Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra” initiative targeted facilities found to be systematically violating public health laws. Among the premises sealed were Emmanuel Lodge, Mandona Lodge, Love Ambassadors Ministry, Lucky Up Shops, Eto Lodge, First Choice Lodge, Gift Lodge, Dominion City, Don Greg UNIZIK Park, and Eke Nibo Market.
Beyond general sanitation violations—such as the illegal channeling of sewage into public drainage systems—the government has prioritized structural safety. At Emmanuel Lodge in Ifite, officials discovered visible cracks in the building, prompting an immediate order for a comprehensive structural integrity test.
Prince Ikechukwu Ndigwe, Commander of Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra in Awka South, emphasized that the state’s “Operation Keep Anambra Clean” initiative is a non-negotiable effort to safeguard public health. He warned that the government would not tolerate the obstruction or harassment of enforcement officers, and that legal action would be taken against property caretakers responsible for environmental negligence.
A State Under Pressure
The crackdown is part of a broader “state of emergency” declared by Governor Chukwuma Soludo in response to severe ecological threats. The state has been grappling with:
- Drainage Blockages: The dumping of refuse into waterways has become a primary driver of flooding.
- Erosion Crisis: Ongoing degradation, particularly in Njikoka and Idemili North, has led to calls for urgent intervention from both state and federal authorities.
- Infrastructure Stress: Recent assessments by the Anambra State Erosion, Watershed and Climate Change Agency (ANSEWCCA) identified critical threats to public institutions, including the Iyienu University Teaching Hospital, due to illegal mining and poor drainage management.
Moving Forward
State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, described the high compliance levels during Saturday’s lockdown as an encouraging sign of public buy-in. He stressed that the exercise is merely the “commencement of a chain of events” designed to prepare the state for the peak of the rainy season.
The government continues to urge property owners and developers to adhere to the Environmental Management, Protection and Administration Law (2024), which mandates the inclusion of catch pits for runoff management and prohibits the encroachment on designated waterways. A monitoring committee, established three months ago, remains active in receiving reports regarding distressed buildings and other environmental hazards to prevent potential structural failures.
