IPOKIA, NIGERIA — The ancient kingdom of Ipokia in Ogun State has been plunged into deep mourning following the transition of its traditional ruler, the Onipokia of Ipokia, His Royal Majesty, Oba Yisa ‘Sola Adeniyi Olaniyan (JP). Palace sources confirmed that the first-class monarch passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at St. Luke’s Hospital in downtown Houston, Texas, United States. He was 55.
Local reports indicate that the revered traditional ruler had been in the United States for several months and transitioned following a surgery related to a prolonged difficulty in swallowing.
A Journey from Public Service to the Throne
Born on September 5, 1970, to the family of the late Prince Hamzat Akanbi Olaniyan of the Iwaye Dodo Ruling House, Oba Olaniyan’s early life began at United African Methodist Church Primary School and Community Secondary School in Ipokia.
Before his ascension to one of Yewaland’s most historic stools, Oba Olaniyan built an impressive corporate career both locally and internationally. He worked with Lufthansa German Airlines in Nigeria and later migrated to the United States, where he served with Emerson Process Management. Committed to intellectual growth, he earned a degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Houston-Downtown, establishing himself as a formidable community and industry leader who received numerous corporate honors.
A Legacy of Culture and Leadership
Oba Olaniyan ascended the throne of his forefathers in August 2020, becoming the 46th Onipokia of Ipokia. The stool is ranked alongside the most prominent first-class thrones in Ogun State, including the Alake of Egbaland and the Awujale of Ijebuland.
Despite encountering legal challenges from rival ruling branches during his early reign, the late monarch remained a deeply visible cultural ambassador. Even during his recent stay in the United States, he actively championed community causes and Nigerian arts, notably making a public appearance as recently as April 2026 at a Houston reception honoring Nollywood actress Biola Adebayo.
The palace and the Ogun State Traditional Council are expected to announce the formal funeral arrangements and traditional rites in accordance with Yoruba customs in the coming days.
