OLAMOBORO, KOGI STATE — What began as a routine disciplinary action in a classroom has culminated in an unspeakable tragedy, leaving the community of Ugbamaka Igah in Olamoboro Local Government Area of Kogi State cloaked in grief and outrage.

Mariam Usman, a dedicated young teacher at Brains Mind Nursery and Primary School, has died after being subjected to a relentless, two-day campaign of brutal physical assault by the family of one of her pupils. The Kogi State Police Command has officially declared the incident a case of culpable homicide and has launched a massive manhunt for the fleeing suspects.
The Genesis of a Fatal Assault
The road to this horrific tragedy reportedly began on Wednesday, June 17, 2026. According to family sources, Mariam administered corporal punishment—flogging—to a male pupil who had misbehaved in her class.
The pupil returned home and narrated the incident to his parents. Incensed by the report, the pupil’s father, identified by family members as Ishaq Abdullahi (from the Chado family), chose to bypass all school protocols and legal channels. That very evening, Abdullahi allegedly tracked Mariam to her residence, where he cornered, slapped, and severely beat her.
Humiliated and Battered
The violence escalated sharply the following day, June 18, 2026. Family accounts state that as Mariam was walking to a local mosque for her evening prayers, she was ambushed by Abdullahi’s wife and a mob of accomplices.
In a shocking display of lawlessness, the assailants did not just beat the young teacher mercilessly; they stripped her naked, inflicting ultimate humiliation in full view of the community.
According to the victim’s elder brother, the savagery peaked when three other individuals—a man identified as Akalama and two sisters visiting from Ogbagebe Okpo—joined the fray.
”They pushed her to the ground, forced her to sit, and kicked her with such calculated force that she began to bleed internally,” her brother recounted in a grief-stricken statement. “The attack was so brutal that she eventually lost consciousness and fainted on the spot.”
Seeing their victim lifeless and bleeding, the attackers fled the scene. Good Samaritans rushed Mariam to a local clinic in Ugbamaka. As her condition rapidly deteriorated due to severe trauma, her family transferred her to Iko-Ojo Hospital in Okpo. Despite frantic interventions by medical personnel, Mariam succumbed to her internal injuries at exactly 5:00 AM on June 25, 2026.
While her brother noted her age as 22, official police records state she was 30 years old.
Police Launch Culpable Homicide Investigation
The Kogi State Police Command has moved swiftly to address the public outrage surrounding the murder. In an official statement, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, confirmed that a rigorous investigation is underway.
”Preliminary investigation revealed that on 18th June, 2026, one Abdullahi Ishaka, accompanied by two women, went to Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School, Ugbamaka, where they assaulted a staff member, Maryam Usman, aged 30, for disciplining a pupil,” ASP Afusat stated.
”The victim sustained serious injuries and was initially treated at a hospital in Ugbamaka before being referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital, Okpo, for further medical attention. She, however, passed away on 25th June, 2026. The suspects fled before the arrival of the police, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend them.”
The PPRO assured the public that as soon as the perpetrators are arrested, the case will be immediately transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a discreet and comprehensive prosecution.
A Community Demands Justice
The tragic demise of Mariam Usman has sent shockwaves through the educational sector in Kogi State, raising urgent questions regarding the safety of educators in rural communities. Civil society organizations and grieving relatives are demanding nothing short of the death penalty for those involved.
”She was just a young woman trying to make a difference in the lives of children,” her brother lamented. “Her body simply could not recover from the trauma inflicted upon her. We are begging the government and the police to ensure these monsters do not escape justice.”
