Lagos State has rolled out detailed parking and identification guidelines for the upcoming Eyo Festival, known as Adamu Orisa Play, targeting vehicles from all 57 Local Governments (LGs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs). This move aims to guarantee seamless coordination, robust traffic management, and public safety as thousands converge for the vibrant cultural spectacle.
The Eyo Festival, a centuries-old tradition unique to Lagos Island, features white-clad masquerades parading from Idumota to CMS in a procession symbolizing ancestral homage and communal unity. Rooted in Iga Idunganran history, it honors the late Oba Regent Eletu Odibo and draws massive crowds, often featuring dignitaries and traditional performers. Officials emphasize early arrival to dodge road closures, underscoring the event’s scale amid Lagos’s bustling traffic.
Strict Access and Timeline Rules
Authorities have set clear timelines for access roads feeding into the festival corridor:
- Roads open fully at 8:00 a.m.
- Full closure at 11:00 a.m. sharp, coinciding with the procession start.
- No vehicles allowed into restricted zones post-closure.
Participants, including official buses and vehicles, must adhere strictly to avoid exclusion. Security and traffic teams will enforce these measures rigorously.
Identification Protocols for Smooth Entry
Proper branding is mandatory for hassle-free access:
- Buses from each LG or LCDA must hoist bold banners at the front, displaying the area’s name prominently.
- Only clearly marked vehicles gain entry to parking zones.
This system helps marshals verify participants quickly, preventing delays in the high-stakes event.
Approved Parking Locations
Six key sites serve as official car parks, strategically placed near the procession route:
- Odeya Car Park, Onikan
- Banquet Hall Car Park
- Arcade Car Park
- National Assembly Car Park (VVIPs only)
- MUSON Centre Car Park
- National Museum Car Park
- Cricket Pitch Car Park
LGs and LCDAs must direct their fleets here and follow on-ground directives from traffic wardens and security operatives.
Festival organizers call on chairmen, council managers, directors, and coordinators to cascade these details immediately to all stakeholders. Cooperation promises an orderly celebration that honors Lagos’s rich heritage.
Past Eyo events, like the 2023 edition, saw similar controls avert gridlock despite heavy turnout, per reports from Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture. With the 2025 play aligning post-holiday buzz on December 27, expect heightened enforcement.
