MAIDUGURI — Detectives from the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested a woman, Fatima Muhammed, following a viral social media video depicting the blatant abuse of the national currency.
The arrest, which occurred on Tuesday, followed a wave of public indignation triggered by a TikTok clip in which the suspect was seen using a ₦500 note to wipe mucus from her nose.
Digital Footprint Leads to Capture
Intelligence officers from the anti-graft agency reportedly tracked the suspect within the Maiduguri metropolis shortly after the video began circulating across various social media platforms. The Commission’s swift intervention underscores its ongoing “War on Naira Abuse,” a campaign intensified over the last year to protect the integrity of the legal tender.
“The suspect was intercepted by our operatives following a detailed forensic analysis of the video,” an EFCC source stated. “Such actions are not just distasteful; they are a direct violation of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act.”
Legal Consequences
Muhammed is currently being held at the EFCC detention facility in Maiduguri. Spokespersons for the Commission confirmed that she is undergoing interrogation and will be arraigned in court once investigations are finalized.
Under Section 21 of the CBN Act 2007, the mutilation, squeezing, or any form of spraying and dancing on the Naira is a punishable offense. Conviction can lead to a minimum of six months imprisonment, a fine of ₦50,000, or both.
The EFCC has recently ramped up its surveillance of social events and digital platforms, warning that the national currency is a symbol of Nigeria’s sovereignty and must be treated with utmost respect. This arrest serves as a fresh reminder to content creators and the public that digital anonymity does not grant immunity from the laws governing the use of the Naira.
