ABEOKUTA — New forensic details have emerged surrounding the tragic passing of the popular Afro-Fuji sensation, Afeez Adeshina, widely known as Destiny Boy. An autopsy report released by the Ogun State Police Command has officially linked the singer’s death to the ingestion of a lethal cocktail of synthetic drugs.
According to the findings submitted by the Consultant Anatomic Pathologist, toxicology results performed on the 22-year-old singer’s remains revealed “harmful levels” of tramadol and its metabolites, alongside high concentrations of methamphetamine.
Medical Findings
The medical report concludes that the primary cause of death was aspiration pneumonitis—a condition where the lungs become inflamed due to the inhalation of foreign material, often occurring when an individual vomits while unconscious or semi-conscious. This condition was triggered by the severe physiological reaction to the toxic substances found in his system.
While initial reports from family members suggested the singer had been battling a long-term illness involving seizures, the forensic evidence now shifts the focus toward accidental or intentional drug toxicity. The official date of death has been recorded as January 17, 2026.
Police Investigation and Arrests
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, confirmed that the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) has been leading the probe. Following the release of the toxicology results, security forces have intensified their investigation into how the singer accessed the controlled substances.
”One suspect remains in custody as we continue to unravel the circumstances leading up to that fateful night in Ijebu-Ode,” a police source stated.
A Star Cut Short
Destiny Boy rose to national prominence in 2019 after his unique Fuji-infused cover of Davido’s hit song “If” went viral. He was celebrated for bridging the gap between traditional Yoruba Fuji music and modern Afrobeats, carving out a niche that resonated with the “streets” and the mainstream alike.
His death, which occurred just months after he and his partner, Iremide, welcomed their first child in late 2024, has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian music industry. Fellow artists including Ruger and Small Doctor had previously called for transparency regarding the sudden loss, with many now expressing grief over the revealed nature of his demise.
As the industry mourns, the revelation serves as a grim reminder of the growing concerns regarding substance abuse within the entertainment sector. The police have assured the public that the case remains active until all parties involved in the distribution of the lethal substances are brought to justice.
