The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has stepped down from his role in the Federal Government to pursue his ambition of becoming governor of Oyo State.
In a resignation letter dated April 22, 2026, and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Adelabu stated that his exit will take effect from April 30, 2026, to ensure a smooth transition process.
The letter, submitted through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, conveyed his “deep sense of honour and profound gratitude” for the opportunity to serve.
“I write with a deep sense of honour and profound gratitude to formally tender my resignation as the Honourable Minister of Power of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This resignation is to take effect on April 30, 2026, to allow for a smooth and orderly handover,” he wrote.
Adelabu expressed appreciation to the President for entrusting him with the role, describing his appointment as a privilege.
“Your Excellency, I remain sincerely grateful for the confidence you placed in me to serve our great nation in this capacity. It has been a rare honour to contribute to national development under your leadership, particularly in advancing reforms in the power sector,” he said.
He explained that his decision to resign was driven by his intention to fully commit to his gubernatorial ambition in Oyo State, in compliance with the provisions of the amended electoral law.
“My decision to step down is informed by my desire to focus fully on my governorship ambition in Oyo State. This aspiration dates back to 2016 during my tenure as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, which led to my resignation from the apex bank in 2018 to pursue the same goal,” he added.
“In line with the provisions of the Amended Electoral Act 2026, which bars political office holders from contesting elections, I consider it necessary to resign at this time.”
