The Nigeria Police Force has arrested and initiated disciplinary action against an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Newton Isokpehi, after a video of him threatening citizens went viral on social media.
The incident, which sparked widespread outrage online, showed the officer delivering sharp threats against members of the public who were filming police activities.
Swift Command Response
In a dual response from both national and state levels, law enforcement authorities moved quickly to contain the fallout. The Anambra State Police Command confirmed that ASP Isokpehi, who serves under the command, was immediately identified, apprehended, and hauled into the Command Headquarters.
Beyond standard interrogation, authorities have subjected the embattled officer to a drug test. The Anambra Command noted that the test is a critical component of its investigation to fully understand the surrounding circumstances and ensure total transparency.
The Commissioner of Police for Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, strongly condemned Isokpehi’s actions, reiterating that the force has zero tolerance for misconduct, abuse of office, or unprofessional behavior that erodes public trust. The command promised that the outcome of the disciplinary tribunal would be made public.
Citizens Have a Right to Film
Reacting to the incident from Abuja, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, issued a stern warning to rank-and-file officers. Speaking through the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the IGP emphasized that citizens are legally permitted to record police officers on duty.
”Members of the public have the right to lawfully record police officers carrying out their duties, provided such recording does not obstruct operations, compromise safety, or interfere with lawful police activities,” the Force Headquarters stated.
The police high command re-emphasized that video recording serves as a legitimate tool for transparency and public accountability, warning that harassment or intimidation of citizens holding cameras will not be tolerated.

Growing Public Scrutiny
The swift arrest comes at a time when the conduct of law enforcement officers is under intense public scrutiny across Nigeria. In statements signed by both DCP Placid and the Anambra Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Finance and Administration, DCP Ngozi Ezeabata, the force thanked civil society groups and social media users for exposing the behavior.
The authorities urged residents to remain vigilant and continue reporting any actions by security personnel capable of undermining public peace and safety.
