Indigent students at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) have received vital support from the university’s Agricultural Media Resources and Extension Centre (AMREC) amid Nigeria’s ongoing economic challenges. The initiative provided 5kg garri packages to 60 beneficiaries, helping them stay focused on studies despite rising living costs.
AMREC collaborated with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope National Accelerated Garri Programme. This effort aligns with AMREC’s mandate to enhance rural livelihoods and food security through extension services across Southwest Nigeria.
Prof. Jacob Olaoye, AMREC Director, stated during the distribution that the garri aims to equip students with essential nutrition for academic concentration. He highlighted the university’s and partners’ dedication to student success in tough times.
Prof. Olawale Dairo, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development), represented Vice-Chancellor Prof. Babatunde Kehinde and praised the donors. He urged students to uphold good conduct to secure more such partnerships.
Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Festus Adeosun, thanked the federal government and called for expanded food items in future rounds. He stressed how these programmes foster a better learning environment.
Miss Grace Olumide, a 500-level Animal Breeding and Genetics student, called the aid timely, saying it sustains energy for effective studying. This echoes past FUNAAB welfare drives, like alumni food distributions ahead of exams.
Established in 1991, AMREC drives FUNAAB’s extension mandate via training, tech transfer, and youth empowerment initiatives. Recent activities include garri processing training for women in Ondo State, reinforcing its food security focus.
