Ondo State Governor, Hon.Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has ordered the enforcement of a ban on operations of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, at night, even as he announces new security measures aimed at tackling insecurity across the state.
As such, he has directed that the use of commercial motorcycles be outlawed between 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. across the state, except for security agencies and other categories specifically exempted by the government.
The directive was disclosed by the Commander of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun Corps, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, while parading over 70 suspected criminals recently arrested in Akure.
Adeleye said all motorcycle riders and owners had been given two weeks to register with the Amotekun Corps and obtain certified documents authorising their operations within the state.
He also announced the prohibition of street trading involving the display of farm produce along major roads, directing that such items must only be sold in approved markets.
In addition, the government banned cart pushing in major metropolitan areas and ordered mandatory registration for dealers in condemned iron scrap metals within two weeks.
According to Adeleye, anyone who fails to comply with the directives would be regarded as operating unlawfully and may be treated as a collaborator with criminal elements threatening the state’s security.
“These measures are aimed at strengthening security, maintaining public order and protecting lives and property across Ondo State,” Adeleye said, urging residents to cooperate with security agencies.
Speaking on recent arrests, the Amotekun commander disclosed that 70 suspects were apprehended for various offences, including 18 suspected kidnappers, 11 suspected cultists, 39 individuals involved in breach of law and order, one anti-grazing violation and one human trafficking case.
He said the arrests were part of ongoing efforts by the state government and security agencies to curb the activities of kidnappers, armed robbers and other criminal elements operating in the state.
