Christa Pike, the Tennessee death row inmate who survived a botched lethal injection on September 30, has spoken publicly for the first time, describing a life of constant physical and mental pain and blaming the state’s “incompetence” for her ordeal.

The statement was dictated to her legal team and released on Friday, a month after the failed execution that left her arms burned and blistered and her throat too sore to speak clearly, ValidViewNetwork reports .

THE ORDEAL

Pike was 18 when she and her boyfriend tortured and killed 19-year-old classmate Colleen Slemmer in 1995, making her one of the youngest women ever sentenced to death in the United States .

She had been prepared to die on September 30, 2026. “I had not contemplated life beyond that night,” she said. “I had also told the people in the room and who were there to witness my execution that I was leaving them in loving kindness”.

Instead, she woke up days later, alone in a hospital bed, confused and in agony.

The execution team had struggled to establish IV lines, and the lethal dose of pentobarbital likely pooled in her tissue rather than entering her bloodstream, leaving her arms severely injured.

THE PAIN

Pike did not mince words about her condition. “There hasn’t been a moment since that night when I haven’t been in pain,” she said. “My body hurts. My arms hurt. My hands hurt. My throat hurts. I still struggle to speak. And the pain isn’t just physical. There is pain in my mind and in my soul” .

She added: “I am recovering, and I know that I am getting stronger. But healing is not the same as being OK” .

THE BLAME

Pike directed her anger at the State of Tennessee.”I’m deeply hurt by the incompetence that has put so many people in this terrible position,” she said .

She also acknowledged the family of her victim.

“I continue to think about my victim’s family and the terrible pain and loss they have endured”.

THE ISOLATION

Pike, who spent much of her three decades in prison in isolation, said being alone in the prison infirmary was a painful repeat of that treatment.

“This isolation carries a particular pain. Much of what I am experiencing today is a repeat of that condition,” she said through her lawyers .

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

Pike remains under a death sentence. Her lawyers are asking Governor Bill Lee to commute her sentence to life in prison without parole, arguing that a second execution attempt would be unconstitutional.

Lee has ordered an independent review of the failed execution and postponed another scheduled lethal injection, but he has suggested that Pike’s sentence will stand unless the courts intervene .

“I don’t know why I survived that night,” Pike said. “I don’t know what comes next. Some days, finding hope is harder than others. For now, I am trying to heal, one day at a time” .

WHY IT MATTERS

The death penalty is supposed to be the ultimate act of justice. But what happens when the state botches it?

Christa Pike is a convicted murderer. She has never denied her crime. But the state of Tennessee attempted to kill her, failed, and left her in a condition that her lawyers describe as torture.

Now she sits in a prison infirmary, in constant pain, waiting to learn whether the state will try again.

The failed execution has renewed scrutiny on how Tennessee carries out death sentences. The state’s correction commissioner resigned in the aftermath .

A former U.S. attorney has been tasked with an independent review. But for Pike, the review does not ease the pain.

She survived an execution. But she has not been freed. And the question of whether the state will attempt to kill her again remains unanswered.
