A three-year-old child should be worrying about cartoons, toys and whether someone will buy her sweets.
Instead, police in Oyo State are investigating an allegation involving the sexual abuse of the child.
The state police command said it arrested a 17-year-old male, Usman Dauda, over the alleged defilement of a three-year-old girl in Saki.
Police said the girl went missing on September 17 after being retrieved from school. A search led to her recovery by the roadside in a distressed condition.
Investigators said preliminary inquiries pointed to the suspect’s apartment, where the girl was allegedly taken.
Police said physical evidence was recovered and the case transferred to the Gender Desk of the State Criminal Investigation Department in Ibadan.
The child has been taken to a medical facility for treatment and psychosocial care.
Police said her identity and privacy would be protected. The suspect remains an accused person, not a convicted offender.
That distinction matters, especially in a case involving a child.
But the larger issue is difficult to escape. When a three-year-old can disappear from the ordinary routine of going to school, the conversation cannot end with an arrest.
It must also ask what systems were supposed to keep her safe in the first place. ValidViewNetwork reports.
