ahead ABUJA — The political landscape aheadof the 2027 general elections has been thrown into deep uncertainty following a Federal High Court judgment that nullified the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and voided its presidential primary.
The ruling, delivered by Justice Peter Lifu in Abuja, has drawn sharp reactions from key opposition figures, with former Rivers State Governor and ADC vice-presidential hopeful Rotimi Amaechi warning that the fallout could trigger widespread unrest if poorly managed.
Anatomy of the Court Decision
Justice Lifu’s November 5 ruling declared the caretaker National Working Committee (NWC) of the ADC—led by former Senate President David Mark—unlawful. The court further invalidated:
- All decisions and actions executed under Mark’s leadership.
- The presidential primary process that produced former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s flagbearer for 2027.
- The emergence of former Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola as the National Secretary.
- The outcomes and resolutions of the party’s 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on July 27, 2025.
The legal challenge was originally initiated by Nafiu Bala Gombe, a former ADC Deputy National Chairman (North-East), who contested the legitimacy of the process through which the Mark-led executive assumed control following the departure of former National Chairman Ralph Nwosu in July 2025.
Amaechi’s Warning and Calls for Calm
Appearing on Mainland 98.3 FM, Amaechi did not mince words regarding the volatile nature of the ruling, cautioning that unchecked judicial interventions in party politics could destabilize the nation.
“It could cause a civil war if not properly managed,” Amaechi warned, pointing an accusing finger at the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for allegedly orchestrating political confusion to weaken the opposition ahead of the polls.
Following an emergency strategy meeting with Atiku Abubakar and David Mark, Amaechi revealed that the party leadership has resolved to urge its grassroots support base to “lower the tempo”. Reassuring party faithfuls of their place on the ballot, Amaechi maintained, “We will be on the ballot. Be rest assured we will be on the ballot.”
Political Repercussions and Defense
The ADC national secretariat has categorically rejected the judgment, announcing immediate plans to file an appeal alongside an application for a stay of execution. The party’s Presidential Campaign Council argues that the Federal High Court ruling cannot legally override prior rulings from courts of coordinate jurisdiction that previously affirmed the legitimacy of Mark and Aregbesola’s positions.
The ruling has also galvanized broader opposition sympathy. Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) 2027 presidential contender Peter Obi publicly faulted the judgment, echoing allegations that the ruling party is maneuvering behind the scenes to suppress genuine democratic opposition.
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that it has yet to receive the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the judgment, dismissing circulating speculations that it has already purged Atiku and Amaechi from its official candidate portal.
What Lies Ahead
As legal teams prepare for what is expected to be a fierce legal battle at the Court of Appeal, political analysts urge all stakeholders to exercise restraint. With the 2027 elections rapidly approaching, the imperative for both the judiciary and political actors remains clear: safeguard the democratic process through transparent, lawful remedies while keeping inflammatory rhetoric at bay.
