LAGOS STATE — A fatal traffic accident unfolded along the busy Gbagada corridor on Sunday morning, leaving one elderly male passenger dead after a fully loaded commercial truck suffered a catastrophic front-tyre blowout and overturned.
The crash, which occurred around the TREM axis heading inward Oshodi, involved a six-tire Mercedes-Benz truck with registration number ABJ 37 AC, carrying a diverse cargo of commercial consignments, including sealed bags and newly branded event chairs.
Anatomy of the Crash
According to preliminary accident reports released by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the heavy-duty vehicle was navigating the urban highway at a considerable speed.
- The Trigger: A sudden front-tyre explosion crippled the driver’s steering control, sending the heavy vehicle careening out of balance.
- The Ejection: Due to the violent momentum, an elderly male passenger seated in the front cabin was hurled out of the vehicle.
- The Fatal Impact: He struck his head against a sharp object on the ground, resulting in immediate trauma that proved fatal before medical aid could arrive.
Multi-Agency Emergency Response
LASTMA’s Night Rescue Team, which was conducting routine surveillance across major traffic corridors in the metropolis, arrived at the scene promptly to cordon off the area and prevent secondary collisions.
- Evacuation: Operatives successfully removed the deceased from the active carriageway, transferring him into a Lagos State Emergency Medical Services (LASEMS) ambulance.
- Support Units: Ground support and security containment were provided by personnel from the Pedro Police Division and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.
Clearing operations faced immediate logistical bottlenecks. Due to the high volume and dense nature of the truck’s cargo, the overturned vehicle could not be hoisted instantly. Authorities indicated that arrangements were made to transload the goods into a secondary truck before the wreckage could be fully cleared from the highway.
Safety Warnings and Official Caution
Expressing deep condolences to the bereaved family, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki described the incident as a painful and completely avoidable loss.
”The devastating consequences of this incident could potentially have been less severe had the truck been travelling at a reasonably controlled speed, notwithstanding the sudden tyre explosion,” Bakare-Oki noted.
The LASTMA chief issued a stern advisory to heavy-duty operators, commercial transporters, and motorists across the state:
- Speed Moderation: Highlighted that excessive velocity drastically shrinks a driver’s reaction window, compromises vehicle stability, and exacerbates crash outcomes.
- Routine Inspections: Mandated rigorous pre-trip checks focusing on tyre health, braking systems, and overall mechanical roadworthiness.
- Composure Under Pressure: Urged drivers to exercise calm and apply correct vehicle-control techniques when faced with sudden mechanical complications, preventing manageable failures from escalating into deadly crashes.
LASTMA reaffirmed its commitment to round-the-clock traffic surveillance, rapid emergency response, and cross-agency collaboration to safeguard lives on Lagos highways.
