Two passenger trains have collided south of Cairo, killing at least four people and injuring 88 others, in the latest rail disaster to strike Egypt.
The Egypt train collision El-Ayyat incident occurred on Sunday morning when a train travelling from Giza to Fayoum rammed the rear of a train travelling from Cairo to Aswan near the town of El-Ayyat, causing several carriages to derail, ValidViewNetwork reports.
THE CRASH
Egypt’s health ministry confirmed the death toll and said 88 injured passengers were receiving treatment at hospitals across Giza Governorate.
The National Railway Authority said the Giza-Fayoum train struck the rear of the Cairo-Aswan train. Officials from Egypt’s Prosecutor General’s Office are investigating the circumstances and causes of the accident .
THE RESPONSE
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi extended his condolences to the families of those killed and instructed authorities to investigate the crash and hold accountable all those “whose criminal negligence led to the tragedy” .
WHY IT MATTERS
Egypt has a long history of fatal rail accidents, often attributed to poor infrastructure, inadequate maintenance and negligence.
For the families of the four people who died, the crash is a tragedy that should never have happened.
For the 88 injured, the recovery will be long and painful. And for the Egyptian government, the crash is a reminder that the country’s rail system remains dangerously fragile.
The investigation has begun. The President has promised accountability. And the people of Egypt are left to mourn. ValidViewNetwork reports.
