For decades, day and night in our homes, offices, newspaper stands, and public spaces, certain individuals have dedicated their lives to ensuring we stay informed. They shape public opinion, unite the nation, and strengthen democracy while upholding the rigorous ethics of the journalism profession under increasingly challenging circumstances.
In luminous recognition of these profound sacrifices, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has officially celebrated a select crop of the country’s finest media veterans and executives. Prominent among the honored stalwarts are the Executive Director of News at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Headquarters, Abuja, Ayo Adewuyi, and seasoned broadcaster and former General Manager of NTA Minna, Ayinde Soaga.
Celebrating Resilience and Institutional Integrity
The high-profile recognition ceremony, anchored on the theme “Strengthening Democracy Through Responsible Journalism and Good Governance,” cast a brilliant spotlight on 23 distinguished media professionals. Rather than waiting to eulogize practitioners posthumously, the NUJ’s milestone event emphasized giving flowers to industry pillars while they remain active, strong, and deeply invested in shaping national discourse.
- Ayo Adewuyi: Recognized for his stellar leadership at the helm of NTA’s news division, Adewuyi has steered public service broadcasting through shifting paradigms, ensuring that objective, factual, and developmental journalism remains a priority across millions of Nigerian households.
- Ayinde Soaga: Celebrated for his decades-long dedication to grassroots and national broadcasting, Soaga’s footprints across various NTA stations, including Minna, epitomize integrity, mentorship, and unwavering commitment to nation-building.
A Stellar Roll Call of Media Titans
The event brought together an elite assembly of the country’s media landscape. Joining Adewuyi and Soaga on the prestigious list of honorees were other notable industry icons, including:
- Martins Oloja
- Azubuike Ishiekwene
- Olori Janet Mba Afolabi
- Kingsley Uranta
- Bayo Bodunrin
- Adeyinka Amosu
- Jubrin Bello Kwami
- Hajia Aisha Abdullahi Jao
”This recognition is a testament to the enduring power of ethical journalism. It reminds us that despite the economic and security challenges confronting practice in Nigeria, the pen and the microphone remain formidable tools for defending truth and nurturing our democracy.”
As the media landscape rapidly evolves into the digital age, the accolades bestowed by the NUJ serve as both a glowing tribute to past achievements and a powerful clarion call for the incoming generation of journalists to uphold the highest standards of professional excellence.
