Beijing has pointed to what it terms “extremely high security risks”, specifically highlighting a surge in rampant cyber fraud and organized underground gambling networks.

​The sweeping advisory, disseminated widely via WeChat, instructs citizens currently inside the southern African kingdom to relocate promptly to safer neighboring territories like South Africa. It further warns that individuals choosing to remain despite the alert will face severe danger, noting that the capacity for Beijing to provide timely consular assistance could be heavily compromised.

​This abrupt directive follows a aggressive local crackdown on transnational crime. According to reports from the Times of Eswatini, approximately 40 Chinese nationals have been kept in detention following a series of high-profile raids targeting illicit online gambling and cyber-extortion rings.
