​POLOKWANE — Hundreds of Zimbabwean nationals, including vulnerable mothers and young children, have sought refuge outside the Mankweng Police Station near Polokwane, caught in the crosshairs of mounting anti-illegal migration pressure across South Africa.

​The families were forced out of their rented properties in surrounding neighborhoods—including Seshego, Mamadimo Park, and Mankweng proper—after landlords succumbed to intense community pressure and threats of penalties for harboring undocumented foreign nationals. What began as a small group of displaced individuals quickly swelled into a makeshift camp sheltering more than a thousand people as coordinated nationwide demonstrations loomed.

​Safety Concerns Drive Voluntary Exits

​Even among those possessing valid passports and permits, a profound sense of fear has prompted many to abandon their livelihoods. Community representatives note that the generalized backlash has blurred the lines between legal residents and undocumented migrants, leaving many feeling that voluntary repatriation is their only viable option for survival.

​”I want to go home because the situation is not good,” said Ester Muchinapaya, a displaced tenant who holds a valid passport. “I don’t know who might come into my house and threaten me. It is better to leave”.

​In response to the humanitarian crisis, officials from South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs and the Zimbabwean Embassy mobilized verification desks directly at the site. The Zimbabwean government dispatched emergency transport to the area, facilitating the departure of multiple buses bound for the Beitbridge Border Post to bring stranded citizens home safely.

​Local volunteers and community groups have stepped in to distribute vital supplies, including food parcels, blankets, baby formula, and sanitary products, while police maintain a heavy monitoring presence to ensure safety around the perimeter.
